Every person and every situation is different. After an initial assessment, we will work together to find a treatment plan designed to fit your needs. We will determine if short-term (5-12 appointments) or long term care are most appropriate for your concerns. In the beginning, a lot of patients do well with weekly appointments. As symptoms become more manageable or a crisis comes to a close, we can switch to every other week.
My approach tends to focus on finding resolution to the deepest, most core issues of life experience. I love to help clients achieve symptom reduction as well as have clarity of self, meaningfulness in their relationships and direction in life. While this is long-term work that can be extremely rewarding, it makes it hard to give an exact estimate of how long this will take.

Yes! As a licensed psychologist, I have ethical and legal mandates to keep all information you share with me, even your identity, confidential. Therapy is a safe space we create together built on trust and healing. Being able to talk openly and freely in therapy is a significant component to addressing your concerns.
When working with minors, I generally make the arrangement that we will keep information shared private from parents except in situations where the child is clearly making dangerous choices (but the situation is not one that reaches the otherwise established boundaries for breaking confidentiality.)
Information may be shared with other entities in the case of imminent suicidal or homicidal intent, need to report child or elder abuse, or in certain legal situations when compelled by a court order.
Diagnostic information and appointment dates are shared with insurance providers, if used.

Cancellation: I ask for at least 48 hours notice if you want to cancel your appointment time. I have a limited number of hours to offer clients and am often at or very near capacity in my caseload, the 48 hours notice allows me time to adjust my schedule. If you cancel with less than 48 hours notice (emergency situations and unpredictable illnesses are exempted) there will be a $80 cancelation fee.
You can call/text me at 573-777-0387 or send an email to reneemapes@gmail.com.
Late: If you show up more than 15 minutes late for your scheduled appointment time, we will need to reschedule and it will be counted as a late cancellation with the $80 fee.
No Show: If you do not show up for your appointment, there will be an $80 fee. Repeated no shows or cancellations may indicate a need to re-evaluate your treatment plan, suspend or end treatment.
Please note: Insurance does not cover these types of charges, so be sure to record your appointment time accurately.

I accept cash, check, and all major credit cards.
Check and see if you have an HSA (health savings account) through your employer; use these pre-tax dollars to cover any costs you may have!
Payment is due at the beginning of the session. However, I know that life does happen and am happy to allow clients to carry a small balance if they encounter temporary financial hardship.

Yes! I am a provider for Aetna and United HealthCare/Optum.
It is critical that you CALL your insurance company and confirm benefits prior to our initial appointment. You will need to know if you have a co-payment (and what that payment is) or if you need to meet a deductible (and how much that is). I am not able to make these calls for you and every plan can be different, even within the same company.
Check out Questions to ask your insurance, I created some helpful scripts to use while calling your insurance company!
If your insurance company refuses coverage, you are liable for all charges incurred. It can be very stressful to discover you might owe several hundred dollars because we've met a number of times before being informed that the services are not covered. I can try to help you with any insurance-related questions you may have, but ultimately the insurance company itself will be the best source of information. Insurance companies can be so confusing! But it does get easier to understand with time and a little investigating.

Sometimes there are out-of-network benefits, for help figuring this out, see Questions to ask your Insurance
Sometimes insurance companies are willing to add people to their panel, even if only a one time exception, if asked.
If neither of these options pan out, self-pay is an option
If self-pay is not an option, I can help you find someone who is in network.

I meet with clients between 8:30-5 Monday-Thursday.

I am able to offer both in-person and virtual appointments. There are benefits to both and we can discuss this further for your particular situation. Virtual sessions are just as beneficial for clients and available research supports this.
Many clients will end up doing a hybrid approach, meeting virtually whenever that makes life a little easier (illness, bad road conditions, going home during winter breaks, etc). I encourage clients to do what is best for them.
If we are doing virtual appointments, it is important that you have a secure, distraction-free, private space to conduct the visit.

I do not write prescriptions or provide psychiatric services. I am a licensed psychologist, I strictly provide therapy. I am happy to provide a referral to a doctor or psychiatrist if you’re interested in exploring this route.
I believe medications are a great tool when it comes to creating a personalized treatment plan, but they aren’t required to get better.
For those with difficulty finding helpful medications, I recommend talking with a psychiatrist or considering the possibility of having specialized testing done to determine what medications might work best with your body. Every body is different and this is a great opportunity to practice doing what is best for YOU.

I highly prioritize providing any/all critical or urgent care to existing clients; however, crisis care or additional appointments in the week are not always possible.
If we are constantly dealing with urgent issues and I feel a higher level of care is needed, I work with you to find an accessible outpatient program or an IOP program where coaching is offered.
If you are feeling suicidal, homicidal, or otherwise are unable to adequately care for yourself, you need to seek emergency care.
Call 911.
Go to any hospital emergency room or

Remember, you are not alone. There are people who want to help you, you just need to reach out.

I work to coordinate care with providers from a wide range of disciplines; this is very common and can be critical to providing ethical, beneficial therapy. You'll need to sign a release of information to allow me to talk with health care providers, loved ones, coaches, or anyone else who might be in the right role to support your growth. In some cases, my ability to determine that you are medically stable and ready for outpatient care is dependent on this collaboration. I'll make sure that you understand the decision making process in situations where such collaboration might occur!
